Evolution of initial random fields by deterministic flows in passive scalar transport

Abstract:
Probability distribution functions (PDF) of scalars in convection that occurs in the stratosphere and the ocean have been observed to be non-Gaussian, and to have heavy tails. However, there have yet been few general methods or models to predict such distributions. In this talk, passive scalar distributions in simple fluid flows by numerically solving tracers obeying the advection-diffusion equation will be discussed in order to investigate the origin of such phenomenon.
