The Lattice Boltzmann Equation: A Kinetic Method for CFD
Abstract: Kinetic methods have attracted much interest in CFD community recently.
In this presentation, I will discuss the reasons why we are interested
in kinetic methods. Specifically, I will discuss in details about the
lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE), which is a kinetic method for near
incompressible flows. I will present the mathematical background of the
LBE method, that is, the derivation of the LBE from the continuous
Boltzmann equation. We will show a number of numerical simulations to
validate the LBE method, including (1) isothermal incompressible
flows, (2) thermal incompressible flows, and (3) turbulent flows.
Finally, I will discuss the feasibility of using the LBE method for
bio-inspired flows which have potentials for applications such as
micro unmanned aerial vehicles (MUAV).
