RESTAURANTS & SUCH
Charleston has tons of really nice restaurants, including some
very fancy ones. The list below contains some of eating options closest to the conference, though not necessarily the best. If you walk along King Street, both North and South with respect to Calhoun Street, you will find lots of choices.
The numbers refer to the spots
indicated
on the map. (Click on the map for a larger image.)

- Andolini's Pizza: Thin crust pizzas and calzones.
- Sermet's: Slightly upscale restaurant offering
Mediterrenean cuisine in a nice setting with paintings by the
owner. Panini are recommended.
- Sushi Hiro: Very good sushi restaurant (mostly dinner).
- Jestine's: Traditional lowcountry fare (meat or fish, and
southern veggies); a local favorite. Beware of long lines.
- La Hacienda:
Fast service, authentic Mexican restaurant. Good for groups.
- Subway: Subs!
- Bruegger's bagels:
NY-style bagels.
- Moe's: Tacos,
quesadillas and burritos
with
strange names, but
still nice.
- Kim's Korean Express: Bi Bim Bop,
Kim Chi, Bul Go Gi, and other Korean favorites, as well as a few
Japanese specialties.
- Jimmy John's Sandwiches: Fresh sandwiches prepared at light speed.
- Fresh Berry Yogurt: Good yogurt place.
- WOK (World Oriental Kitchen): Noodle and rice dishes with local organic vegetables. Nice interior decor (all recycled!).
- Starbuck's: Coffee.
- Starbuck's:
More of the same, in a larger space.
- Kudu: Great atmosphere in this
coffee place with an African theme.
- Caviar and Bananas: Yummy deli with lots of choices: from panini to sushi, to cheese boards, soups, and ready-to-eat treats of all sorts. Also, great coffee and espresso.
- Tasty Thai: Good Thai food at reasonable prices for both lunch and dinner.
- (Off The Map!): Walking out of the Science Building and north along Coming to the intersection with Cannon, one finds another favorite spot: Five Loaves, offering super fresh creative soups, salads and sandwiches, plus some nice pasta, fish, and meat plates for dinner. Closed on Sunday.
For those who wish to travel
a
little farther:
- Hyman's
Seafood
(two blocks down Meeting St. from Wentworth) serves
very fresh fish; another local favorite, but tends to get crowded with
tourists after 6pm.
- Old
Town is
a Greek
restaurant on King St. two blocks south of Wentworth.
- Heading north from Calhoun on King will bring you
past
many
restaurants, including the following. On the left, just
past the traffic light at John St., are Bubba Slyes Deli, and the funky Juanita Greenberg's Nacho Royale, (with outdoor seating in the back: try their Quesadillas and Fish Tacos.)
- Monza, authentic northern Italian style pizza, with outdoor eating and quick service, is a little farther north along King St.
- Roughly across the street from Monza is Basil, offering
really fine Thai food. It can be crowded during regular meal
hours.
- Crossing King, and walking along John, you'll find Rue de Jean, a very nice French restaurant, and (just around the corner in the small alley) Coast, with great seafood. Both are a bit pricey, but the food is good!
