Interdepartmental Patient Flow Model
for MUSC Hospital
Abstract: A significant problem for hospitals such as MUSC
(the Medical University of South Carolina) is a high frequency of
patient saturation in the nursing compartments. This ongoing
project seeks to find a mathematical model for predicting when
overflows will occur in the individual nursing compartments and
determining what causes such overflows. The model presented is based on
transition probabilities computed from one year's worth of patient bed
census data.
